Culture Design Theory & Digital Tools Applied to Ecovillages and the Regenerative Movement

This paper explores the concept of regenerative villages within the larger framework of the regenerative movement. It argues that decentralized network states, ecovillages, and sustainable microcities can be built more efficiently by focusing on indexing shared information. Furthermore, it posits that application of culture design theory – an entirely unexplored field – is an essential component of the shift towards a regenerative lifestyle. By examining cooperative structures and behaviors, this paper asserts that a paradigm shift towards collectivism is necessary, and presents various ways of achieving that shift via culture design. Additionally, it highlights the digital tools needed to index the information and support the culture design necessary for thriving ecovillages. Drawing parallels with previous renaissance periods, the "regenaissance" is discussed, emphasizing its similarities. This paper provides practical applications on how a regenaissance can be achieved through intentional culture design.

Nicole Reese has been studying, living in, and obsessing about regenerative villages for 5 years. Educated as an anthropologist, she has a professional background in graphic design, marketing, and event production working for TEDx Talks and WELabs. Nicole worked for her local government in native plant and wildlife habitat restoration and green waste management in the Long Beach Office of Sustainability, before leaving California to live in ecovillages in Costa Rica and Mexico. In 2021 she founded Terrenity, an educational organization to support ecovillage seekers and builders. This project became an official collaborator of the Global Ecovillage Network. Terrenity evolved into a nonprofit model to support emerging ecovillages in Guyana and Uganda, while Nicole merged its venture projects with Regen Tribe as co-founder and COO. She now leads mastermind projects, research, and events in regenerative community education and design.
