Diversity and Inclusion in Intentional Communities: 2019 Conference Schedule

The Triennial Conference of the International Communal Studies Association

Conference Dates: July 18-21, 2019

Conference Location: Camphill Communities near Hudson, NY, USA

Welcome to the International Communal Studies Association’s thirteenth triennial conference! We are very excited about the program we have developed and hope you will enjoy our sessions, tours, performances, and workshops! This conference will explore strategies that intentional communities use to promote the inclusion and empowerment of persons of diverse abilities, cultures, races, economic backgrounds, religions, ages, genders, and sexualities. We will ask: What can the field of communal studies learn from the unique experiences of communities that focus on the experiences of particular groups that have historically been marginalized? How have communities succeeded or failed in their efforts to increase diversity or strengthen inclusion? What is the relationship between the mere presence of previously excluded persons in a community, and the full inclusion and empowerment of those persons?

Our Hosts: Camphill Communities in Columbia County

This conference is being hosted by four distinct communities, all part of the Camphill movement, located within 25 miles of Hudson, New York. Camphill Village USA, also known as Camphill Copake, is one of the two original Camphill Communities in North America, founded in 1961. Triform Camphill Community is a youth guidance community that provides special support to young adults with developmental disabilities. Camphill Hudson is an urban community that is immersed in the lively culture of the city of Hudson. And Camphill Ghent is an elder community providing supportive care to older adults of all abilities.

Our Sessions

As you will see, our program includes several different kinds of sessions. Plenary sessions are intended to bring everyone together to explore the main themes of the conference. Paper panels feature two or three scholars presenting their research on intentional community. Workshops are more participatory, and may draw on scholarship or lived experience in community. Some of the workshops are sponsored by the Camphill Research Symposium (CRS), which is happening in tandem with the ICSA conference. They are open to all conference participants! Artistic workshops are fully inclusive and participatory, and showcase some of the artistic traditions of the Camphill movement. The program also includes two film screenings, “Hippie Family Values” and “Intelligent Lives,” as well as two performances of “Food Talks” by the Hudson Players, an inclusive theater company based at Camphill Hudson. Finally, you will have multiple opportunities to tour our host communities.

Session and Meal Sign-Ups

In order to ensure that the conference runs smoothly, we have had to limit the number of participants in certain sessions, tours, and those meals that will take place simultaneously in more than one location. (There is enough food for everyone, but we need to be sure that the diners are evenly distributed among the locations!) These sessions are clearly marked in the program. We also have a sign-up sheet for each of these events at the registration table. It is important that you look at the schedule, plan ahead, and sign-up so that we are prepared for you!

The Conference Shuttle

Many of our conference participants will not have your own transportation, and accordingly we are providing shuttle vans to help you get from one session to another. The shuttle schedule is incorporated into the conference program, with each departure marked by an S. Shuttles will leave from designated bus stops at each community: Solaris at Camphill Hudson, Falcon Hall at Camphill Triform, Village Green at Camphill Copake, and the longterm parking lot at the hilltop at Camphill Ghent. If you are driving from one Camphill to another, you may wish to swing by the bus stop to see if others need a ride. (Alternatively, if it becomes clear that we have lots of drivers and few riders, you might park your car and take the shuttle.) We have done our best to make it possible for everyone to get to the sessions they wish to attend, but on Saturday and Sunday you will want to plan ahead, as there are simultaneous sessions in multiple communities on those days. If you get stuck somewhere without a ride, please call Deborah Altus at 785-760-0602, Amy Hart at 805-602-6895, or Stephen Lloyd-Moffett at 805-503-0381.

The Conference Program

This program booklet begins with an overview of the conference schedule. We then have some acknowledgments from ICSA. It concludes with driving directions to and among the conference locations and maps of the host communities. A separate document contains abstracts of most sessions and bios of the presenters. This has been distributed electronically to all conference participants, and is available in paper form upon request.
